Signing & Witnessing a Will

Your Will must be correctly signed and witnessed to be legal. You can choose almost anyone to be a witness however, it's not recommended to have witnesses who are under 18 or an executor of your Will.

To ensure your Will is legally valid the following procedure should be followed:

  1. You (the testator) and your two witnesses must all be in the same place for the duration of signing and witnessing the Will.

  2. Your witnesses cannot be beneficiaries of your Will (witnesses cannot be blind)

  3. Firstly, you must sign your Will in sight of both witnesses

  4. Then each witness should sign in sight of yourself and the other witness

  5. If your Will is more than one page long, you and your witnesses should sign each page at the bottom directly under the last line of text. This ensures that nothing can be added later.

  6. Finally you must date the Will on the date that it is signed and witnessed

  7. You cannot attach any other documents to your Will.
